School social work services provided at Hubbard Woods School are available to responsively meet the individual social and emotional needs and particular concerns of children, parents, and teachers. A licensed clinical social worker, who is also a certified school social worker, is available to any child within the school. Individual direct service is provided to individual children for 30 or 60 minutes/week when requested by a teacher and parent/s. An IEP is not required to meet with the school social worker, but written parental consent for services is necessary. Creative play therapy approaches along with ongoing consultation with classroom teachers are methods employed to address a range of emotional and social concerns. Examples of some issues addressed in individual sessions include how a child deals with anger, frustration, or grief; adjustment to changes in the family such as divorce or family move; issues of self-worth and self-esteem; and general adaptability, etc. Group experiences are facilitated both in and outside of the classroom. Groups offered include groups for new students entering the school in the Fall; friendship groups; social skill building groups; groups of shared interest to bring children together; confidence building groups, etc.
